Guy Fawkes was a Roman Catholic soldier in England in the early 1600s who was unhappy with the Protestant-led government. He joined a plot led by Robert Catesby to blow up the Houses of Parliament on November 5th 1605 by hiding 36 barrels of gunpowder under the building. However, the plot was discovered when an anonymous letter warned authorities. Guy Fawkes was found in the cellar with the gunpowder and arrested. He and the other conspirators were tried, convicted of treason, and executed. The failed Gunpowder Plot is still commemorated today in the UK on Guy Fawkes Night with bonfires and fireworks.
